Wildcats host Diamond Dame Classic
National champion team part of weekend field
ABILENE -- The ACU softball team will open the home portion of the 2003 season this weekend when it hosts the Diamond Dame Classic at Wells Field.
The three-team, round-robin classic will get started at noon Friday with ACU taking on Emporia State (Kan.). The other team that will be playing in the tournament is St. Mary's, which last year finished 54-11 and won the NCAA Division II national championship.
The Lady Rattlers will be in action at 2 p.m. against ACU and then at 4 p.m. against Emporia State. The classic will continue Saturday with three more games at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The Wildcats enter the Diamond Dame Classic at 5-4 on the season after finishing with a strong 3-1 mark at last weekend's Lone Star Conference First-Pitch Tournament in Irving.
ACU swept a pair of games on Friday, knocking off East Central and Northeastern, before splitting on Saturday, falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State before beating Cameron.
Sophomore rightfielder Katie Bryan had a fantastic tournament, going 6 for 12 (.500) with five RBI in the four games. She's now hitting .556 on the season with a team-best eight RBI and 15 hits in 27 at-bats.
Second baseman Robin Woodall is also off to a fast start with a .360 batting average and seven RBI through nine games. Christina Yorkey is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in five starts and six appearances on the mound.
After hosting the Diamond Dame Classic this weekend, the Wildcats will head back to Irving next weekend to play in the Schutt Sports NCAA Division II Leadoff Classic against some of the best teams in the nation. The Wildcats will then return home March 7-8 to host the ACU Round Robin Classic.
