Webb, Manning honored by LSC
Webb earns defensive honor for 2nd time this season
ABILENE -- Abilene Christian's 21-7 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in a Lone Star Conference South Division contest at Memorial Stadium was dominated by the defense and special teams.
And both of those units were honored Sunday by the LSC office.
Junior linebacker Randall Webb, who spearheaded a defense that sacked Commerce quarterbacks 12 times and allowed just 49 yards of offense, was named the LSC South Division Defensive Player of the Week. And redshirt freshman defensive back Danieal Manning, who returned the second-half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and five punts for 74 yards, was named the LSC South Division Special Teams Player of the Week.
Webb had 10 tackles (four solo), 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 pass breakup and 1.5 sacks in the game. He also pulled off the special teams trifecta on Commerce's first punt of the game, blocking the Lions' punt, recovering it and returning it two yards for the game's first touchdown.
Manning, meanwhile, returned a first-quarter punt 37 yards to set up a short field for an ACU touchdown drive that gave the Wildcats an early 14-0 lead. He then returned the opening kickoff of the second half 97 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-0. The 97-yard return was the fourth-longest kickoff return in school history and the fourth-longest scoring play in school history.
The Wildcats were originally credited with nine sacks in the game (three by sophomore defensive end Clayton Farrell and two by defensive end Brad Walton), but after ACU coaches reviewed the film, defensive backs Dawon Gentry and Omar Tejeda and linebacker Matt Allen should have been credited with sacks to give the team 12 for the game.
The ACU record for team sacks in a game is 13, set Sept. 17, 1994, in a 40-7 win over Adams State (Colo.). The 12 sacks against Commerce are the second-most in a single game in school history.
