LUBBOCK -- ACU's first meet of the 2003 indoor track and field season was a moderate success for the Wildcats, who had three athletes qualify automatically for the NCAA Division II indoor championship meet and another 10 and a relay team qualify provisionally.

The Wildcats -- competing at the Red Raider Open at the Athletic Training Center at Texas Tech -- saw senior Nic Alexander return to form with a win in the 55 meters in 6.20 seconds. However, he had already qualified automatically with his time of 6.19 seconds in his preliminary-heat win.

Also qualifying out of the 55 meters was junior Christie Van Wyk, whose preliminary-heat time of 6.34 is a solid provisional time.

Alexander was the only men's automatic qualifier, but the women had two, led by senior high jumper Maresa Cadienhead, who continued her dominance at the collegiate level by winning the event with a mark of 6 feet, 1.50 inches. Cadienhead -- who set the Division II all-time best last May at 6-4.75 -- has not lost a high jump competition since her sophomore year.

ACU's other automatic qualifier was newcomer Yuliva Stashkiv, who blistered the track en route to winning the mile in 4:49.62.

The Wildcats' other provisional qualifiers on the men's side were senior Shai Shalev in the shot put (57-0.75) and freshman Cory Aguilar in the pole vault (15-7.25).

The Wildcats other provisional qualifiers on the women's side were Althea Johnson in the 55 meters (7.08); Angie Waters in the 800 meters (2:12.81); Alice Bergstrom in the high jump (5-5.75); Olessya Belyayeva in the long jump (19-2.25); Lakeshia Finch in the triple jump (39-5.00); Shauna-Gaye Stephens in the 55-meter hurdles (8.36) and the 4x400 relay team (3:54.58).

The Wildcats will return to action next week when they return to Lubbock and the ATC.
