ACU falls to St. Mary's, whips Panhandle State
CANYON -- The ACU women's basketball team split a pair of games last weekend at the West Texas A&M 7-Up Classic, falling to St. Mary's University before beating Panhandle State by 50 points on Saturday.
In Friday's 75-62 loss to St. Mary's, the Wildcats were held to just 23 first-half points as the Lady Rattlers jumped out to an 18-point halftime advantage. ACU was able to slice into that lead in the second half, but St. Mary's held on for the 13-point win.
Freshman guard Ashley King led three players in double figures with 16 points (4 of 7 from 3-point range). Junior all-America center Melanie Carter had 15 points and junior center Lynsie Blau had 10 points and nine rebounds.
In Saturday's 105-55 rout of Panhandle State, ACU shot 57 percent from the field (40 of 70), including 55 percent (11 of 20) from 3-point range. King, Jenny Jackson and Leah Wilson all had three 3-pointers in the game.
Blau led the way for the Wildcats with a double-double effort of 22 points and 13 rebounds. Carter also had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. King had 16 points, Wilson 14 and Jackson 10 as the Wildcats rolled to the victory.
ACU will return to action later this week when it takes on Central Oklahoma (Thursday in Edmond, Okla.) and Northeastern State (Saturday in Tahlequah, Okla.) in a pair of Lone Star Conference crossover games.
