Will be a backup defensive lineman in 2007 after spending the 2006 season as a redshirt.

High school: One of the top offensive linemen in the Panhandle as a junior and senior, Hales helped the Canyon HS Eagles to a combined 21-3 record over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. As a senior in 2005 he was a first team all-district selection on both the offensive and defensive lines and was named to the Texas Sports Writers' Association Class 3A all-state squad. The Eagles were a Region I-3A Division II semifinalist and Hales was a team captain. He recorded 28 "pancake blocks," and he only allowed one sack on 392 pass plays as the Eagles averaged more than 300 yards passing per game. As a junior, he played on the Canyon HS team that went 11-1 and became the first team in school history to start a season 11-0.

Personal: His father, Rick Hales, played football at ACU in 1971 and 1972. Born 16 July 1987. 2006 graduate of Canyon High School.
