LAKE CHARLES, La. - Abilene Christian men's golf gears up for its third tournament in as many weeks as it competes in the Golden Nugget Invitational, hosted by Lamar at The Country Club at Golden Nugget on Monday and Tuesday. The Wildcats look to stay hot from the Military City Collegiate presented by USAA, where Thomas Buisson tied for second place.
Golfers will play 36 holes on Monday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start before closing with the final round on Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.
ACU will travel with a crew of Buisson, Grégoire Hoyeau, Tres Hill, Jack Hollingsed, Colin Leonard and Preston DeFriend to the par-72, 7,000-yard course.
The No. 158 Wildcats join an 11-team field featuring three programs from Texas in No. 125 Tarleton State, No. 154 UTSA and No. 188 Lamar.
No. 150 Louisiana Tech, No. 157 Wichita State, No. 169 Troy, No. 192 Louisiana-Monroe, No. 199 Oakland, No. 217 Northern Colorado and No. 241 USC Upstate round out the competition.
ACU matched its best showing of the season at the Military City Collegiate at TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course last week. The Wildcats placed fourth at 27-over 891, powered by Buisson's runner-up effort at an even-par 216. It was the best performance of the senior's career and the top outing by an ACU golfer since 2020-21.
The Wildcats ranked second in the field on par 3s and par 5s at 9-over and 7-under, respectively. They tied for the second-fewest bogeys and collected the fifth-most birdies with 38. ACU tied for third with 155 pars and was one of just three teams with multiple eagles.
Buisson was named the University Credit Union WAC Men's Co-Golfer of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference as one of just three golfers to close at or below par in San Antonio. He finished one stroke back of the individual champion. Buisson has placed within the top 25 in six of the team's seven tournaments and was its top performer in five events.
Hollingsed has logged his top two performances of the season in his last two outings. He tied for 26th place alongside Leonard at the Military City Collegiate after drawing for 28th at the Hal Williams Collegiate to begin the spring. Hollingsed and Leonard each registered their best showings of the year.
