The ACU men's tennis team recorded a good opening weekend to the 2025 Fall season with play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Baylor Sept. 12-14.
Head coach Juan Nuñez decided to split hsi squad between two events: the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open, and the Waco Fall Kickoff Classic.

Waco Fall Kickoff Classic
ACU's weekend at Baylor was highlighted by transfer
Luis Jose Nakamine, who won his singles draw with three straight victories without losing a set. Nakamine took down Matthew Faraci (SMU) 6-0, 6-3, Timeo Bretin (UTSA) 6-4, 6-4, and Egor Gorin (Texas A&M) 6-4, 6-2.
Dennis Dutine and
Tomas Quesada both lost their first round match, but rebounded to win the consolation final in their respective draw.
Dutine defeated players from SMU and Baylor, while Dutine took down opponents from UT Arlington and Rice.
In doubles competition, Dutine and Quesada toppled teams from Texas A&M and UTSA before falling in the draw's championship.
Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open
In Corpus Christi, the Wildcats were more successful in the doubles bracket with two pairs going a combined 4-2.
The team of
Ethan Scribner and
Alejandro Verdasco won two of three matches, including the 3rd vs. 4th place match in their draw.
In the other doubles draw, Ford Elizonda and Phillipp Huebert teamed up to beat pairs from UTRGV and Lubbock Christian. Elizondo and Huebert lost to a team from UIW in the draw final.
Elizondo won his opening singles match over Guy Dagan (Lamar) 6-1, 6-4, and Huebert swept Louis Drapeau (Lamar) 6-4, 6-4 in a consolation match.
ACU's men's tennis team returns to the court on Oct. 3-5 when a split squad will take on competition at the Ron Wesbrooks Invitational in Beaumont, and the U.S. College Cup Invitational in Torreon, Mexico.
