WACO, Texas - The ACU softball team fights to keep its momentum going with two nonconference games against Baylor at Getterman Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats had a quiet week without a midweek contest -- which was much-needed after playing 8 games in a 9-day span from March 28-April 5. ACU went 3-5 in that stretch, but finished with a strong showing in a 7-3 loss versus No. 14 Texas Tech, and then won the series at Utah Valley. After dropping the first game to the Wolverines, the Wildcats rebounded to earn back-to-back 1-run victories.
ACU boasts the reigning
WAC Player of the Week Miranda Lista. The senior third baseman hit 3 home runs over her 5 games last week, including 2 against the Red Raiders. Lista drove in 6 runs, and scored four times herself.
This weekend serves as ACU's bye in WAC play. The Wildcats have three more league series to play -- vs. Tarleton State (April 18-19); at California Baptist (April 25-26); and vs. Grand Canyon (May 2-3).
"It actually works out in our favor to refocus for the last three weeks of the season," ACU head coach Jo Koons said of the timing of the conference bye. "The WAC is so tight right now you can't afford to take time off, so it is awesome Baylor has the same bye week."
ACU sits in 5th place in the WAC with a 7-8 conference record. The top eight teams make the WAC Tournament on May 7-10, and the top four are rewarded with byes into the double elimination portion of the bracket.
ACU and Baylor faced each other in both teams' season opener on February 6 at the Aggie Classic in College Station. The Lady Bears took down the Wildcats 10-2 in five innings. More than two months later, though, the squads have a much better feel for their strengths, weaknesses and identities.
Following this weekend's pair of games in Waco, the Wildcats return to Abilene for a three-game series with rival Tarleton State. The schedule has been modified to better accommodate Easter Weekend. ACU and Tarleton will now play a doubleheader on Friday, April 18, beginning at 4 p.m., and a single game on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m.
