
ACU Heads to Rio Grande Valley for South Texas Match Play

MCALLEN - With four consecutive top-four performances under its belt, No. 122 Abilene Christian men's golf competes at the South Texas Match Play at McAllen Country Club this week. The Wildcats will play two matches on Monday before a final round on Tuesday at the 6,397-yard, par-71 course.
ACU opens the tournament against New Orleans with an 8:30 a.m. start on Monday, with matchups going forward determined after the first round. East Texas A&M, Incarnate Word, Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana are in the field, as are Western Athletic Conference programs Stephen F. Austin and host UT Rio Grande Valley.
The Wildcats are coming off a second-place showing at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational in Sugar Land last week, as both Jaime Lewis and Preston DeFriend logged top-10 performances. They'll lead ACU's lineup along with Grégoire Hoyeau, Colin Leonard and Jack Hollingsed.
Lewis logged a 2-over 215 to tie for fifth place, his best performance over the past two seasons. The Johannesburg, South Africa native shot par in the tournament's final two rounds and tallied eight birdies as the field's top golfer on par 3 holes at 1-under.
DeFriend matched Lewis with eight birdies as he carded a 3-over 216, tying for ninth place in the best performance of his career. The Lubbock product finished an even par on par 3s.
Hollingsed wasn't far behind at the Colin Montgomerie Invitational, tying for 13th place with a 6-over 219. He led the Wildcats with 10 birdies while recording the second-lowest score of the first round at 3-under 68. Hollingsed performed the best in the field on par 5 holes, notching a 5-under finish.
Leonard and Hoyeau rounded out the tournament in ties for 33rd and 39th place, respectively, at 12-over 225 and 13-over 226. Hoyeau was named the University Credit Union WAC Golfer of the Week on Feb. 6 after finishing in 12th place at Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate.
