ABILENE — The ACU men's tennis team continues its homestand this weekend with matches against Tyler Junior College and Trinity University.
The Wildcats and Apaches from Tyler JC will play Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. against Trinity. Both matches will be played indoors in the Teague Special Events Center.
The Wildcats are 4-4 on the season after starting 0-4. The current stretch of home matches was supposed to be seven straight, but the match against Trinity was a last-minute addition, making it an eight-match homestand. After this weekend's matches, ACU will play Lamar at home next Saturday (Feb. 22) and begin Western Athletic Conference play on Thursday, Feb. 27, against UT-Arlington.
ACU has barely been tested in its current four-match winning streak, having beaten Midwestern State 5-2, Lubbock Christian 6-1, UT-Rio Grande Valley 7-0, and Hardin-Simmons 7-0. The Wildcats' No. 1 player, Daniel Morozov, is 3-3 in singles and 4-2 in doubles action. He didn't play either singles or doubles against HSU but should be in the lineup for at least the match against Tyler.
The Apaches are the country's No. 1 junior college team, despite a 0-3 start to the season. Tyler has lost to UT-Arlington (5-1), Louisiana-Lafayette (5-2), and Southern Arkansas (4-2).
The Apaches won the national championship last season, the 18th in program history. They are led this year by returning All-Americans Alex Despoja and Daniel Borisov.
Trinity is 3-0 before Saturday's match against Concordia. The Tigers have beaten Lewis & Clark (6-1), Our Lady of the Lake (5-2), and Hardin-Simmons (7-0). Their No. 1 singles player, Jared Perry, is 3-0 on the young season.
