Volleyball Completes Tournament Sweep

ABILENE – Abilene Christian completed its sweep of the ACU Tournament on Saturday, taking down Grambling in three sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.

Ashli Edmiston led the Wildcats with 16 kills as ACU finished off the weekend with nine consecutive set wins.

"I think we did a lot of good things over the weekend and we had some people step up in different roles," said ACU Head Coach Ijeoma Moronu Alstrup. "I'm very proud of the group for sticking together and not backing down. It would have been really easy for us to lose that third set of our first match yesterday but we stepped up in a really big way and we were able to shift our momentum in a positive direction."

The Wildcats shot out to an 8-1 lead in the opening set, including two aces and a kill by Izzy Larson, but the Tigers pulled to within 15-14. ACU responded with two kills by Breanna Box and two aces by Sara Carrizales in a 5-0 run to go ahead 20-14. Emily Mekelburg ended the set with a kill.

ACU led by as many as five at a few points in the second set but GSU made it a 23-23 contest. Edmiston got a kill and Carrizales added a set-ending ace to put the Cats ahead 2-0 in sets.

Grambling erased a 10-point deficit in the third set to tie the finale at 23-23. Braden Bossier and Hannah Gonzalez quelled the uprising for the match win.

Carrizales finished with five aces and Larson added four. Rachel Koss led the Cats with 23 assists.

Emily Mekelburg was a part of three blocks on the night and Carrizales led the back row with 19 digs.

The 4-2 Wildcats host Texas Tech on Thursday at 6 p.m.
