ABILENE – Abilene Christian volleyball earned a pair of national academic honors, the United States Marine Corps and the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Thursday.
Â
In addition to being listed as one of 200 NCAA Division I teams to qualify for the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award, ACU also earned a spot on the Team Academic Honor Roll, reserved for teams with grade point averages in the top 20 percent of the division.
Â
The Team Academic Award requires a 3.3 cumulative GPA for the academic year.
Â
The Wildcats boasted a 3.74 grade point average last fall and a 3.8 in the spring to end at 3.77 for the year.
Â
ACU is joined on the honor roll by California Baptist, Grand Canyon and Southern Utah from the Western Athletic Conference. The Wildcats are one of three Texas teams on the Division I list, joined by Rice and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Â
This is the 31st year of the award.
Â
"The commitment our coaches make to help their student-athletes pursue the best versions of themselves is evident in the academic accomplishments highlighted today," said AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. "Achievement on the court has always been closely tied to success in the classroom which is reflected by the number of championship programs honored."
