ABILENE – Abilene Christian opened Western Athletic Conference tennis action with a 5-2 win over Grand Canyon on Friday.
"Any time you start the conference play it's a different feel and for us to start the way we did was a great relief," said ACU Head Coach Juan Nunez. "I like a lot of the things we did, overall. I think the energy and the way the guys approached this; they handled it the way I would hope. I was hoping we would show the experience that we have and I thought we did."
The Wildcats won the doubles point with wins by
Daniel Morozov and
Mihaly Deli at No. 2 and
Savan Chhabra and
Ethan Scribner at No. 3.
Deli won on the sixth line of singles, Morozov put the Cats on the cusp of the win and
Dario Kmet sealed the victory with a win at No. 1.
Cesar Barranquero also added a three-set win at No. 3 singles.
ACU takes on Seattle at 11 a.m. on Sunday to finish the first weekend of WAC action. The Redhawks outlasted New Mexico State, 4-3, on Friday.
