Wildcats Move Up in Final Round

HOUSTON – Abilene Christian moved up one spot in the final round of the Bayou City Collegiate Classic, tying 49th-ranked Southern Mississippi for ninth place.

Scores for almost every team tumbled on Tuesday's final round with ACU carding a team 296 to move past Stephen F. Austin and firm up its top-10 finish. Sam Houston won the event at 839 with Houston at 848. ACU finished up at 866.

"I thought the guys held it together today playing with some very strong teams," said ACU Head Coach Tom Shaw. "We unfortunately putted and chipped very poorly all week and That did not enable us to move up the leaderboard as much as we liked."

Grégoire Hoyeau led the Wildcats with a 12th-place finish at two-under-par (214) after matching his first round of 73 in the final round. Hoyeau was dazzling in the second round on Monday with a 68. He birdied three holes on Tuesday and parred the ninth hole, which was a bogey factory for many in the field.

Zane Heusel tied for 22nd with an even-par 216, finishing Tuesday with a round of 71, including a pair of birdies. Brian Comegys fired a 74 on Tuesday to finish at 224 and tied for 56th, picking three birdies on Tuesday.

"All in all, it was a decent performance, especially tying a top 50 program," said Shaw." I'm very proud of Greg's performance earning a top-15 performance as a freshman. Zane Heusel was also a steady presence this week and really helped our team score each day."

Thomas Buisson shot 78 to finish in a tie for 76th at 230 and Jaime Lewis' 82 left him at 234 for 85th. Buisson had two birdies over the final round.

Karson Grigsby was part of that tie for 76th with Buisson, shooting a 77 in the final round, and picking up a pair of birdies along the way.

ACU birdied 42 holes for the tournament.

The Wildcats had the fifth-best mark on Par 3s for the tournament, averaging 3.18, with Hoyeau leading the tournament field with a 2.75 average. Heusel performed well on the par 5s, getting the second-best average among his competitors at 4.33.

"It was good to knock the rust off and we're looking forward to our next event in Cabo against some of the nation's top programs," said Shaw.

ACU returns to action in the Cabo Classic March 5-7.
