ABILENE – Abilene Christian heads into an exciting weekend in Annapolis where the Wildcats play Towson and Navy in the Navy Classic on Saturday and Sunday.
ACU is 2-1 on the season after a 65-57 win over Angelo State last week.
Towson is 1-1 after its game against Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday was suspended due to a roof issue.
Navy moved to 2-2 after a 66-59 win against Binghamton on Tuesday.
ACU Storylines
HOWDY: The Wildcats are meeting both Towson and Navy for the first time in women's basketball.
1000: Aspen Thornton needs six points to reach the career mark of 1000. She had 608 points in her one season at Ouachita Baptist, where she was Division II's top scorer in 2021-22.
GUARD STATS:
Aspen Thornton leads the Wildcats with 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She had three assists against Southwestern Assemblies of God and four steals against Angelo State.
SCORING TRIO: Freshman
Payton Hull and
Aspen Thornton share the team scoring lead with 11.3 points per game each.
Bella Earle is close behind at 10 points per game. Each player has taken a turn leading the team in scoring through three games. Thornton is coming off of her best-scoring game of the season with her 18 points against Angelo State. Hull had a season-high 14 points against SAGU and Earle had a team-high 14 against Rice.
ON BOARDING: Bella Earle and
Addison Martin lead the team in rebounding with 6.3 and 6.0, respectively. Both had their season-best games in that category against Angelo State when Martin had nine and Earle had eight. Martin, who missed the Rice contest, leads the team with nine offensive rebounds.
Scouting Towson
- Towson has a win against Maryland-Baltimore County and a loss to Columbia on the schedule. They trailed Maryland-Eastern Shore when the game was suspended after halftime.
- Patricia Anumgba and Kylie Kornegay-Lucas have been the team's statistical leaders so far. Anumgba leads the team with 14 points and 2.5 steals per game and shared the team lead in assists at 3.5 with Kornegay-Lucas. Lucas averages 11 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds per game.
- Kornegay-Lucas is the preseason Player of the Year and Towson is the preseason favorite to win the Coastal Athletic Association.
Scouting Navy
- Zanai Barnett-Gay, who earlier this season earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week, leads the team in scoring at 21.5 points per game, rebounding (8.3) and steals (3.5).
- Kyah Smith averages 11.3 points per game and gets three assists per game.
- In addition to Binghamton, Navy also has beaten Susquehanna while losing to Penn State and Mount St. Mary's.
- Navy plays Quinnipiac on Friday on the first day of the classic.
