Clouse in first, ‘Cats in third after Day One at WAC Championship

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The ACU golf team wrapped up the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Friday, and the Wildcats find themselves in third place as a team after a strong opening performance. Individually, senior Alex Clouse is leading the way for the Purple and White, as his 4-under is the clubhouse leader heading into the second round.

Abilene Christian trails only pre-championship favorite Sam Houston and New Mexico State, with the top team claiming a seven-stroke lead. GCU, UTRGV and Utah Valley claim the 4-6 spots after the first 18 holes, as second place and sixth place are separated by just five strokes.

"Our guys played like they did in the practice round, and there was a lot of solid ball-striking. We could have taken advantage of the par-fives a little better, but all in all, I'm proud of Alex with the way he finished and the rest of the guys for backing him up," head coach Tom Shaw said. "It was a completely different golf course with the wind direction, but we adjusted well and are looking forward to tomorrow. We have to take advantage tomorrow, but we are right there, and our guys should feel good about that."
