LUBBOCK, Texas – The ACU track and field teams took part in the Masked Rider Open this weekend, with
Annina Brandenburg breaking the school record in the discus throw for the second consecutive week to highlight the meet. The Purple and White picked up more than a dozen lifetime-bests in another strong showing and don't appear to be slowing down any time soon.
"We had some truly great performances this weekend.
Savannah Walker in the sprints, Annina in both the discus and the shot put,
Grant Baker in the pole vault and
Jack Marshall in men's sprints all proved to be standouts today," head coach
Jerrod Cook said. "I'm excited to see the spotlight shine on these athletes that are rising to the level of national caliber performances, as they are leading the way for ACU track and field."

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Freshman Athan Huelskamp opened the weekend for the Wildcats with a lifetime-best discus throw of 49.96m (163' 11") to land in seventh place, while teammate Tyler Richardson followed with an eighth-place distance of 48.48m (159' 1"), just two inches shy of his PR.
- A week after breaking the school record in the women's discus, three-time WAC Field Athlete of the Week Annina Brandenburg did so again in Lubbock on Friday with a distance of 58.18m (190' 10") on her second effort of the day. Zoe Burleson (49.87m/163' 7") and Kailey Roskop (45.63m/149' 8") came in fifth and sixth respectively with each recording a new personal best.
- Roskop came up with a fifth-place finish in the women's hammer throw, doing so with a lifetime-best distance of 46.70m (153' 2").
- Richardson added a fourth-place finish in the shot put (16.21m/53' 2 ¼"), while Brandenburg won the event on the women's side with a distance of 16.55m (51' 11 ¼"), setting her second new lifetime best of the day.
- In the men's hammer throw, Richardson (56.18m/184' 4") picked up second place, while Huelskamp (49.36m/161' 11") rounded out the event's top five.
- Grant Baker's second-place effort in the pole vault earned him a new lifetime best and propelled him to second in the WAC, as he cleared 5.18m (17'). Teammate Cole Newman finished in third place with a height of 4.88m (16'), giving the Wildcats two of the top three individuals in the event.
- Kaydi Pursley added a PR of her own on the women's side, as her vault of 3.36m (11' ¼") was good enough for seventh place.
- Triple jumper Ella Anttila came in third place with a mark of 12.57m (41' 3").
- Zoe Spinn cleared a WAC-leading 1.71m (5' 7 ¼") to finish the women's high jump in third place, while JJ Ply gave the ACU men a second-place finish with a successful 1.97m (6' 5 ½") jump.
- Megan Kirby's long jump of 5.99m (19' 8") was good enough for fourth place and second in the WAC, while Payton Kirk came in sixth after posting a season-best mark of 5.91m (19' 4 ¾").
- Kirby went on to earn an eighth-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.98, and Jessica Campbell picked up 15th after posting a time of 15.66.
- Jamal January once again highlighted the 110m hurdles for the Wildcat men, as his 14.03 was good enough for third place and a lifetime-best. Ply (14.21), Jeremy King (14.55) and Ryan Bornemeier (14.86) came in seventh, 11th, and 14th) respectively.
- The women's 400 proved to be a big event for the Purple and White, as Ja'Dasia Sims (56.66, 4th), Savannah Walker (lifetime-best 56.96, 5th) and Julia Perry (lifetime-best 57.48, 6th) gave ACU three of the top six finishers.
- Taylor Tolen was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 100, doing so with a time of 11.59, while D'Anna Smith landed in sixth place (11.80) in her collegiate debut in the event. Amy Ambelang (11.96, 9th), Mya Henson (12.08, 12th) and Karrington Lewis (12.13, 14th) all added strong races for the Wildcats.
- On the men's side, Jack Marshall (10.45) finished a tenth of a second off his personal best but still finished in seventh place individually.
- Breonna McCarthy-Reese set a new personal best in the women's 800, as her time of 2:22.07 rounded out the top ten for the event.
- Jimmie Horton was ACU's top finisher in the men's 400 hurdles, picking up fifth place with a time of 56.12. Bornemeier gave ACU another top ten hurdler, doing so with a time of 59.29.
- Walker (23.89, 5th), Tolen (23.95, 7th) and Ambelang (24.43, 11th) highlighted a strong ACU showing in the women's 200. Marshall paved the way for the Wildcat men with a fourth-place time of 20.88, less than half a second off his PR.
- The weekend closed out with the 4x400 relays, with the ACU women's team of Julia Perry, Courtney Latham, McCarthy-Reese and Ja'Kaylon Sabbath coming in third place with a time of 4:00.96.
- The men's 4x400 group of January, Horton, Bornemeier and King rounded out the weekend in fifth place with a time of 3:24.09.
UP NEXT:
- The Wildcats look to continue their momentum into next week's Carl Knight Inivtational and Multis, which will take part on the campus of SFA in Nacogdoches. The three-day event is set to begin on Thursday afternoon.
