Wildcats battle for purple supremacy in non-league tilt with ‘Jacks

ABILENE, Texas – Fresh off a win to start WAC play, the Abilene Christian football team is set for a second consecutive road trip this week, traveling to East Texas to face a familiar foe in SFA. Saturday will be the first of two meetings between the Wildcats and Lumberjacks this fall, with this week's matchup serving as a non-conference duel and the Nov. 19 contest in Abilene counting toward the league standings.

The Wildcats (4-1, 1-0 WAC)
  • ACU started slow in last Saturday's WAC opener against Utah Tech, but the Wildcats came away with 20 unanswered points in the second half to take a 26-10 victory and begin league play in the win column. The win moves the Wildcats to 4-1 for the first time since the 2011 season, two years before ACU made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks.
  • Sophomore running back Jermiah Dobbins turned in a monster game for the Purple and White, rushing for 130 yards and a trio of second-half touchdowns to lead the ACU offense.
  • Linebacker Tory Hargrove found his way to the ball all night, as the senior team captain recorded seven tackles and three sacks while forcing a fumble and adding in a pair of quarterback hurries.
  • Blair Zepeda became just the fifth Wildcat kicker in program history to reach 200 career points, doing so on a second-quarter field goal from 37 yards out.
  • Kobe Clark continues to make his way toward the top of the ACU record book in receptions, as he is now just nine away from passing Hall of Famer Jerale Badon
  • ACU is now 2-0 all-time in WAC openers, defeating Lamar (2021) and Utah Tech (2022) by a combined total of 72-10 in those contests.

The Lumberjacks (2-3, 0-1 WAC)
  • SFA is coming off a second straight one-point loss in their Battle of the Piney Woods rivalry with Sam Houston. This year's game was played at NRG Stadium in Houston and drew more than 28,000 fans, making it the highest-attended WAC game so far this fall.
  • Safety Myles Heard made his presence felt throughout the game, racking up a season-high 14 tackles in a tremendous defensive performance.
  • Moe Wedman came away with the catch of the game, hauling in an 85-yard touchdown from quarterback Trae Self on the second play of the second quarter.
  • In the only home game of the season to date, SFA defeated NAIA member Warner by a final of 98-0 on the final Saturday of September. The Lumberjacks have a win streak at Homer Bryce Stadium that currently stands at 11 games and dates back to the 2019 campaign.
