NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Irene Rono extended her streak of First Team All-Conference performances and Levi Chambers recorded his career best XC conference finish at Saturday's WAC Championships.
Rono - a XC conference champion for the Southland and WAC - placed fourth this morning at SFA's Pecan Acres Park with a 6K time of 20:20.2 to earn First Team All-Conference accolades for the third consecutive year, while Chambers finished his 8K in 15th place (24:01.2) to claim second team honors.
Chambers was one of four Wildcats to make a significant jum in the individual standings from last year's conference meet. An ACU student-athlete since 2018, Chambers moved up 11 spots from a year ago and teammate Maxwel Kiplagat advanced 14 spots to 38th.
Neal Helgerson additionally finished among the top half of the field, moving up 48 places to 44th, and Kevin Castruita - a Chicago State Cougar here a year ago - moved up 13 spots to 69th.
Overall, the ACU men placed ninth in the 13-team, 100-runner field with 214 points.
For Rono, today's effort marked her 12th top-five XC performance since 2020. She also has recorded seven career XC victories and is poised to qualify for her third consecutive NCAA Championship next month.
Rono and three of her Wildcat teammates finished among the top half, giving ACU a sixth-place showing of 167 points. Veteran Prudence Kiyeng placed 35th with a time of 21:59.7 followed by a pack of five ACU freshmen: Peyton Bornstein, Kate Williams, Bella Evans, Renee Elliott and Kate Hansen.
Cal Baptist won the men's and women's team titles with 23 and 24 points, respectively. Said Mechaal led a 1-2-3 finish for the Lancer men with his 8K mark of 22:58.6, while the women's individual crown was claimed by Utah Valley's Everlyn Kemboi (19:33.9).
