FRISCO, Texas – A season of so many ups and downs and questions made everything a challenge, but just as every ACU Wildcat team persevered on the field or the court, the individuals did so in the classroom as well. In the wildest of years, a whopping 229 student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. There were 13 programs that boasted a team GPA of 3.00 or higher during the 2020-21 year.
With flux travel schedules and constant wonder of when a game or a practice or a class would get canceled or postponed, and to add a once-in-a-lifetime Texas snowstorm to the mix, it truly is a sign of how remarkable the student-athletes, professors, coaches, and support staffs are at Abilene Christian. ACU had the fourth-highest number of student-athletes on the Honor Roll across the league. ACU student-athletes combined for a 3.28 cumulative GPA for the year.
A remarkable 58 individuals boasted a 4.0 GPA for the year.
All women's teams completed the year with GPAs well above 3.0 for the 15th and 16th consecutive semesters, led by women's tennis' 3.63. Five men's programs finished above a 3.0, with golf pacing the way with a 3.46, followed by baseball (3.36).
Six men's program finished above a 3.0. Golf recorded the best GPA of the spring at 3.63, followed by tennis (3.25) and track and field (3.17).
There were a total of 2,502 student-athletes from across the Southland Conference on the list, and a combined 528 individuals posted a flawless 4.0 GPA throughout the unprecedented season.
"These student-athletes had to work through a season of unknowns and new protocols," Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. "Besides excelling in competition, I am proud of how they faced adversity to continue their success in the classroom."
