Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Wright, Arteaga guide 'Cats to Sunday win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Caylen Wright scored four minutes into the game, Christina Arteaga added a penalty-kick goal in the second half, and the ACU soccer team picked up a big road win on Sunday over the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Wildcats (6-5-1, 2-3-0 SLC) held a 2-0 lead in the second half, and despite an Islander goal in the 59th minute, ACU held on for a 2-1 victory to get back in the win column.

Southland Significance
ACU gets back into a tie for sixth in the win column in the Southland standings, and with still six games left to go in the regular season in league play, the 'Cats still are in a good position to get a bid to the Southland Conference Tournament in Beaumont.

The Goals
- 4' | Caylen Wright got free on a break-away on the right side, and after the ball was placed perfectly, the keeper came out of the box to play the ball, and the sophomore popped it high in the air and over her head, and the ball rolled all the way into the net for the score.

- 51' | After an AMCC foul, Christina Arteaga lined up for a penalty kick. The veteran toyed with the keeper, and sent it through the left side as the keeper went to her left. ACU led 2-0 and wouldn't look back.

- 59' | Corpus got on the board with a goal from Larissa Fagundes, but it wouldn't be enough.

The Numbers
- ACU held a 13-10 lead in shot attempts, including a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.
- Erin Smith earned the win, and tallied five saves. Smith and the defense were strong in the final 31 minutes of the game to preserve the 2-1 win.
- Natalie Jones led the way with five shot attempts, while Arteaga tallied four.
- All four of Arteaga's shot attempts were on frame.
- Wright only recorded two shot attempts, but the first was the most important, putting the 'Cats in front.

Up Next
- ACU has an incredibly quick turnaround, and will wrap up their three-game road trip with a game on Tuesday at Sam Houston. Kickoff from Huntsville is set for 1 p.m. The Wildcats will only have one game next weekend, and it is in non-conference play against Dallas Baptist.
