MTEN completes homestand with 5-2 win over Trinity

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian men's tennis completed a short two-match homestand Saturday with a 5-2 win over Trinity University, which is ranked 12th in NCAA D3 and started its spring with a 4-3 win over Rice. The Tigers came into the match having won two straight over ACU's neighbors from Hardin-Simmons (W, 9-0) and McMurry (W, 8-1), but couldn't complete the Key City sweep as the Wildcats won the doubles point followed by four of six singles contests.

ACU has won its last five vs. Trinity after losing two straight between the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

ACU's doubles point was earned by its No. 2 and 3 lines as Oswaldo Cano and Joaquin Delgado doubled up Wilson Hamilton and Cameron Krimbill, 6-3, while Mihaly Deli and Jose Maria Rastrojo edged Jordan Pitts and Alessio Azzalini, 6-4. 

Cano, Deli and Rastrojo all were winners again in singles at the No. 3, 4 and 6 lines in straight sets. At the top line sophomore Savan Chhabra was up 6-2, 5-1, when his opponent Hao Nguyen retired.

"I'm extremely proud of our men's team," said Director of Tennis Juan Nunez. "There was good energy, fight and focus, making today a true team win ... And any time you beat a team from Trinity, you know you have some players. They're a good program and well coached. They're always going to make you compete, and they beat an incredible program in Rice. It's always fun to play them." 

The Wildcats return to action next Friday and Saturday for matches vs. SMU and Tyler Junior College. The duals likely will be played indoors as temperatures in Texas are expected to drop below freezing.
