MTEN starts homestand with 6-1 win

ABILENE -- Abilene Christian's men's tennis team Friday won its first dual match of the young season, topping Texas Permian Basin, 6-1, on the outdoor courts of the Eager Tennis Center. ACU has won its last six matches vs. the Falcons dating back to 2012.

The Wildcats recorded an efficient sweep of doubles before being tested some in singles as both No. 1 Savan Chhabra and No. 4 Joaquin Delgado were pushed to a third set. Delgado ultimately triumphed over Roberto Garcia after being a set down, 3-5, 6-2, 10-5, but Chhabra fell to Enrique Sanchez in a super tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7. 

The remaining four singles contests were captured in straight sets by No. 2 Riley Tran, No. 3 Oswaldo Cano, No. 5 Mihaly Deli and No. 6 Jose Maria Rastrojo.

"It's really good to take care of your home courts," said Director of Tennis Juan Nunez, "but I love the fact that a D2 team came in here and pushed us. I've been telling the guys from the beginning that we're not going to be a team that wins games easy this year, no matter who we play, and we're also not going to make things easy on our opponents. It's important for our guys to realize we have to empty the tank every time we play. If we get down, we have the ability to bring the energy up and turn the match around and win, which is great, but we're not the kind of team that can ever sit back even a little bit. Our conference is not going to allow us to do that."

The Wildcats continue their homestand Saturday wth a 2 p.m. match vs. Trinity.
