FRISCO, Texas – With less than two weeks to play of the regular season, the new seeding system for the 2021 Hercules Tires Southland Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament is beginning to become clearer. Known as the "Points" system, the revisions were approved in January by the Conference's athletic directors in case all teams did not complete the league schedule.
Men's Standings Update
Women's Standings Update
A team must play at least half of its Conference-scheduled contests to be eligible for the postseason or win the regular-season championship. All men's teams have met that benchmark, while UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's teams still have games to play to reach that minimum but can still accumulate enough points to finish within the top eight.
In the event teams are unable to complete the full 16-game, regular-season schedule, contests not played will be counted as a tie for seeding purposes only. A point accumulation system (based on the traditional soccer model) shall be utilized for determination of the regular-season champion and tournament seeding. Three (3) points are awarded for each win, one (1) for each tie and zero (0) for a loss. If there are ties among point totals, each sport's individual tie-breaking policies will come into play for seeding purposes.
Under the altered system, Sam Houston sits atop the men's standings with 33 points from 11 wins (11-1). The Bearkats have four games left on their schedule to add to that total. Abilene Christian and Nicholls also have four games to play, and have 31 and 30 points, respectively. Stephen F. Austin sits in fourth place, but the Lumberjacks are postseason ineligible for the NCAA and Southland Tournament.
If that top four holds, the fifth-place team would also get the first-round bye into the quarterfinals. Northwestern State clinched its tournament berth with 21 points (7-4), but the Demons control their seeding destiny. The other eight teams are still in the running for the remaining four bids.
Stephen F. Austin women have clinched their tournament bid with a 10-0 run so far in conference play. The Ladyjacks still have four games to play and two dates that will not be able to be rescheduled, giving them 32 points with the ability to compile a maximum of 44 points. Sam Houston is currently in second place with 23 points and three games to play.
This year's tournament will be held March 10-14 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. The winners of the conference men's and women's tournaments will earn the Southland Conference's automatic bid into the 2021 NCAA Tournaments, which will be held in Indianapolis and San Antonio, respectively.
