WBB battles UAB and Stetson in Florida

DeLAND, Fla. - The Wildcats women's basketball team wraps up the 2020 portion of its schedule with a trip to the Sunshine State for the 33rd Annual Hatter Classic. Stetson University is hosting a three-game, round-robin style tournament in DeLand, Fla. and ACU will play two games over the weekend. The 'Cats square off with the UAB Blazers of Conference USA on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 12 p.m. CT (1 p.m. ET) before closing the tournament with a game against the host Stetson Hatters on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. CT (11 a.m. ET).

PLEASE NOTE: Both games will air live on 98.1 The Ticket and the iHeart Radio app, but the TV setup is different. ACU's game on Sunday will air on ESPN+, but the first game on Saturday against UAB will have NO LIVE VIDEO. The only option to keep up with Saturday's game is through live stats and 98.1 The Ticket.

ACU STORYLINES

  • The Wildcats are off to a stellar start 6-1 start, and will hit the road for just the second time in the young season. ACU is coming off a home win over UT Tyler, 81-26, on Tuesday.
  • ACU hit a program-record 19 three-pointers against UT Tyler, and attempted 46 in the game, the second-most in a single game ever.
  • The Wildcat defense allowed single-digit points in all four quarters, including just five in the fourth.
  • Anna McLeod was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Monday, earning the award for the second consecutive week. McLeod has scored in double-figures in every game this season.
  • Freshman Katie Horyna scored a career-high 10 points against the Patriots.
  • ACU is averaging nearly 86 points per game, which ranks 21st nationally. The defense has shined so far as well, allowing just 51 points per game, good for 11th in the country.
  • The 82 steals rank fifth nationally.
  • ACU's 222 three-point attempts are second-most in the nation, and the 91 makes lead the country.

SERIES HISTORY

It is the first-ever meeting between the teams. The University of Alabama at Birmingham resides in Conference USA.

SCOUTING UAB

  • Margaret Whitley was fouled on a three-pointer with one second left against Stetson on Friday, and then proceeded to hit all three free throws to give UAB a 49-48 win on day one of the classic.
  • The Blazers are now 4-1 on the season, and are led by Whitley who is averaging nearly 24 points per game, the 16th-highest mark in the nation.
  • It was a low-scoring, defensive battle against Stetson, and UAB trailed by nine points with under seven minutes to play in the game. UAB chipped away and took the lead in the final second.

SERIES HISTORY

It is the first-ever meeting between the teams. Stetson University resides in the Atlantic Sun Conference. ACU matched up with ASUN favorite, Florida Gulf Coast, two seasons ago in Fort Myers, Fla.

SCOUTING STETSON

  • It was a tough loss in the opening day of the classic for the Hatters, losing on those three free throws from Margaret Whitley. Stetson held a near double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, but UAB chipped away and came all the way back.
  • The Hatters are 2-2 on the season after having the first four games of their season cancelled due to COVID-19.
  • It's been a balances scoring effort this season, with three players (Jamiya Turner, Day'Neshia Banks, and Yaz Wazeerud-Din) all averaging between 10 and 12 points per game.
