Wildcats make three-point history in Teague

ABILENE — The ACU women's basketball team got back to its winning ways Tuesday night in the Teague Center with a dominant showing against UT-Tyler. The Wildcats broke a program record with 19 three-pointers in the 81-26 win, and attempted 46 from distance, the second-most in the 50-year history of the team. 12 players scored in the game, with three in double-figures, and the defense allowed only single-digit points in every quarter of the game.

Key Plays

  • The tone was set early from the three-point line; the first 24 points scored by ACU were all from downtown. ACU opened 8-11 from behind the arc.
  • Madi Miller Anna McLeod and Makayla Mabry each hit three-pointers to open the night.
  • After leading 12-7 in the quarter, ACU scored the final 14 points, with freshman Katie Horyna scoring the final five of the period.
  • Mabry and Paige Emborsky hit the first two triples of the second quarter, and ACU built up a 34-11 lead.
  • Josie Larson hit the last three of the half, and ACU had racked up 11 of them in the first 20 minutes.
  • Miller, Kamryn Mraz, Taylor Morgan, and Emborsky (in that order) all hit triples in the third, and ACU led 61-21 after three quarters.
  • ACU allowed just seven points in each of the first three quarters, and just five in the fourth.
  • Diamond Willcot scored seven straight points in the fourth, including her first three of the season.
  • The record-breaking triple came from Larson, the 19th of the game.

Stat Pack

  • 19 three-pointers made is not just a D1 program record, it's the most in the history of the program. It replaces the 18 makes from Feb. 18, 2014 against Arlington Baptist.
  • The 46 attempts from the outside ties for the second-most in the history of the program, matching the 46 against Texas Lutheran on Nov. 8, 2013.
  • The 55-point margin of victory is the third most in the Julie Goodenough era, and the second-most in the Division I era. ACU beat Southwestern Adventist, 108-21 (87 points), in the 2012-13 season, and beat Northwood, 105-44, in the 2013-14 campaign.
  • Mabry and McLeod paced the 'Cats with 11 points apiece, and combined to shoot 6-16 from distance.
  • Horyna set a new career number with 10 points, and hit a pair of triples.
  • Willcot matched a career-high with 9 points.
  • Nine different players hit a three-pointer.
  • Miller and Alice Stevenson each tallied a team-high six rebounds.
We did not shoot the ball very well last week against UMHB or Texas A&M. But our players put in a lot of work in a short amount of time and did a great job of being shot ready.
Julie Goodenough, Head Coach
It's easy to have a good game when your teammates are as good as mine. We did a great job of getting each other great looks and getting the ball to each other when we were open.
Katie Horyna, Freshman Guard
