LUBBOCK, Texas -- Abilene Christian won the doubles point and watched its top two singles competitors knock off nationally ranked opposition, but the match-clinching point proved to be too elusive for the Wildcats as Texas Tech escaped with a 4-3 win Monday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Senior
Jonathan Sheehy won both his matches. First he and classmate
Jackson Fine doubled up the tandem of Ilgiz Valiev and Jackson Cobb, 6-3, at the No. 1 doubles position, and in singles he completed his undefeated weekend with a straight-set triumph over the 69th-ranked Valiev, 6-1, 6-4. Sheehy is ranked 77th nationally by the ITA.
ACU went on to win the doubles point thanks to senior
Nikolas Moceanu and junior
Akinori Wada holding off Francisco Vittar and Franco Ribero, 6-4, and then sophomore Dimitrios Azoides gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead after knocking off No. 114 Reed Collier, 6-2, 6-3.
The Red Raiders, however, won the final four singles matches in starting their season at 3-0. They defeated UTRGV in their morning dual, 7-0, and won at Iowa last Thursday, 4-3.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, Jan. 31 with a 9 a.m. / 6 p.m. home doubleheader vs. Prairie View A&M and Oral Roberts. Admission is free.
