Fisher, Men's No. 1 doubles winners during Oklahoma weekend

ABILENE -- Freshman Claire Fisher and the senior doubles team of Jackson Fine and Jonathan Sheehy were the Wildcats' big winners this past weekend in the Sooner State, where the men's and women's teams battled sides from Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Wichita State.

Friday, Fine and Sheehy defeated the Volunteer duo of Pat Harper and Andrew Rogers, 6-3, at the top line, and Saturday, Fisher grinded her way to a No. 6 line triumph over Wichita State's Natsumi Kurahashi, 7-6 (11-9), 4-3, retired.

Dimitrios Azoidis additionally put up a tremendous fight vs. Tennessee's Scott Jones before bowing, 7-6 (7), 6-4), and against the Sooners, both Sheehy and freshman Savan Chhabra battled to a third set at the No. 1 and 6 lines, respectively. Jake Van Emburgh beat the 77th-ranked Sheehy, 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3), while Alex Martinez topped Chhabra, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (11-9).

"This trip was great for both teams to compete against the best in the country," said Director of Tennis John Walker. "We experienced great match and mental conditioning, and witnessed some substantial growth. Both teams are better in many ways because of the expertise we gained this weekend, so we're taking many little wins away from every match. Overall, a solid start in our quest to accomplish conference championship goals and I'm excited about the attitude of both teams as we go into this weekends matches."

Next up for the men is a noon home match Saturday, Jan. 18 vs. UTRGV, and the women will play host to the Vaqueros and SMU Mustangs for a Sunday indoor doubleheader starting at 9 a.m.
