PEARLAND, Texas — The ACU Wildcats couldn't follow up their strong star Monday with an even better Tuesday, and their up-and-down round resulted in them tumbling four spots in the team standings, finishing tied for seventh at the Bayou City Collegiate.
After posting rounds of 291-292 over the par-72, 7,254-yard Golfcrest Country Club on Monday and finishing the day tied for third, the Wildcats posted a 14-over-par 302 on Tuesday to finish tied with George Washington for seventh at 21-over-part 885.
Sam Houston State — which hosted the tournament, along with the University of Houston and Rice University — won the team title at 2-under-par 862 after a round of 5-over-par 293 on Tuesday.Texas-San Antonio (4-over-par 868) finished second, followed by Texas State and UT-Arlington (both at 6-over-par 870) tied for third, Arkansas State (7-over-par 871) in fifth, Houston (12-over-par 876) in sixth and then ACU and George Washington (both 21-over-par 885) tied for seventh.
The only other two Southland Conference teams in the field – McNeese and Houston Baptist – finished 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 14-team field. McNeese was 13th at 29-over-par 893, while HBU finished at 53-over-par 917.
As they have been all spring, the Wildcats were paced by sophomore Alex Clouse, who finished tied for 14th at rounds of 73-72-72 put him at 1-over-par 217. Senior Garrett Glanton finished tied for 31st at 6-over-par 222 after carding rounds of 72-73-77.
"We had a bit of an up-and-down day Tuesday," ACU head coach Tom Shaw said. "We played a good front nine, but gave it all back on the back nine. We just did not close well and that's a trait that we usually have in spades.
"I'm poud of Alex Clouse for another terrific finish against a strong field," he said. "I'm looking forward to watching Alex and the rest of our squad play next week at the Southland Conference championship tournament. It will be a tremendous test and we'll be ready!"
The Wildcats will be back in action next week at the Southland Conference championship tournament, which begins Monday (April 22) and goes through Wednesday (April 24) at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club-Dye Course in McKinney.
