McKINNEY, Texas – The ACU golf team closed out its season Tuesday with one of its strongest finishes of the spring championship schedule as the Wildcats placed fifth at the Southland Conference championship tournament, played at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
The Wildcats shot rounds of 300 and 303 on Tuesday to finish at 48-over-par 912 at the par-72, 7,219-yard course, which was playing extremely difficult for all 11 teams because of hard and fast greens. ACU was one shot behind fourth-place Southeastern Louisiana (47-over-par 911) and three shots behind third-place Stephen F. Austin (45-over-par 909), which moved up four spots from seventh to third on the final day.
Sam Houston State repeated as the conference champion, posting rounds of 293-291 — two of the top five rounds of the tournament — on Tuesday to finish at 25-over-par 889, finishing seven strokes ahead of runner-up Lamar, which finished at 32-over-par 896. Sam Houston State will now head to the NCAA Division I Regional Championship at a site yet to be determined. The regional tournament is set to take place May 13-15.
Sophomore Chase Allison was ACU's top finisher as he finished tied for eighth at 8-over-par 224 after posting back-to-back 74s on Tuesday. Sophomore Alex Clouse — who was tied for 10th after Monday's opening-round 72 — slipped back to tied for 24th after rounds of 79-81 on Tuesday. Bryce Dooley finished tied for 18th after rebounding from an opening-round 81 to card rounds of 76-72 on Tuesday to finish at 13-over-par 229.
