BEAUMONT, Texas – After 16 non-conference games to get ready, the ACU softball team (6-10) opens the Southland schedule with a three-game set against the Lamar Cardinals (9-13) on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9. After taking two of three games in their home openers, the Wildcats will head back on the road for the first two weeks of the league schedule. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday beginning at 4 p.m., and game three of the series gets underway on Saturday at 1 p.m.

HOME OPENERS… The Wildcats opened their Poly Wells Field schedule last weekend, and despite weather conditions, were able to get in all but one game in the round robin. The University of Maine and the University of Missouri-Kansas City made the trip to Abilene, but UMKC was forced to leave early Saturday due to weather in their local area. ACU played the Black Bears twice, winning in identical 9-2 fashions. The Kangaroos topped the Wildcats on Friday night, 8-2. ACU hit .278 with 15 runs driven in, the most in any three-game stretch this season. Eight of the 22 hits went for extra bases, as the team tallied 34 total bases.
AND I'M "KEELING" GOOD… Through the team's first 16 games, sophomore
Kayla Keeling has given her team a good feeling at and behind the plate. The Houston native leads the way with a .340 batting average, a .600 slugging percentage, a .411 on-base percentage, three home runs, and 10 runs driven in. The ACU backstop has also yet to make an error on the year as the team heads into league play.
DEUCES WILD… Freshman
Kaitlyn Huseman (#2) has been quite the spark plug for the Wildcats at the shortstop position. The rookie has started 15 of the team's 16 games this season, and took the very first pitch she saw in her home park and sent it to the wall in right-center field for a double. Huseman went 4-for-6 over the weekend, including three doubles, and drove in a run as well. It's been an impressive start defensively, getting a ton of chances at the position with the most action. Huseman has made just five errors thusfar, for a fielding percentage of .926.
