Battle of the big cats in San Marcos

ABILENE – The Wildcats got back in the win column on Thursday afternoon with a win over Champion Christian College, 90-58. The team continues play in the Southwestern Showdown presented by Engage Telehealth tonight as they head to Texas State to take on the Bobcats.

SERIES HISTORY
- The teams met in Abilene in 2017, for their first DI meeting, with the Wildcats earning the four-point win over the Bobcats.
- In that game, Payten Ricks scored six points and was the only current Wildcats to see significant minutes on the floor.
- The Bobcats return two of their five starters from that game who combined for 15 points in the game.
- The overall series dates back to 1927-28, with Texas State leading the all-time series 40-18.

ACU STORYLINES
- Payten Ricks is just nine points away from passing Austin Cooke for fifth in total scoring in the Wildcats DI era.
- The Wildcats are still looking for their first win over a Division I opponent this season.
- In their three losses, the Wildcats have lost by a combined 21 points. UNLV bested the team by 14 points.  
- The team has struggled to hit from deep, shooting just 28.1 percent from beyond the arc.  
- Ricks, as well as Clay Gayman and Kolton Kohl are all averaging double-digit scoring through the first five games of the season.
- Assistant coach, Brette Tanner, was an assistant to Texas State head coach Danny Kaspar during his time at SFA. Antonio Bostic played for Kaspar and Tanner at SFA.

SCOUTING TEXAS STATE
- Nijal Pearson leads the Bobcats in scoring averaging 19 points per game through six contests.
- The Bobcats went to UNLV and came away with a win over the Runnin' Rebels, 64-57.
- Texas State is holding opponents to under 60 points per game on the season so far.
- The team is outrebounding their opponents by 5.7 rebounds per game.
- Outside of Pearson, the Bobcats have a very balanced scoring attack, with five players averaging between 6.8 and 9.8 points per game.
