ABILENE – Abilene Christian men's tennis completed its three-day, three-match trip to Southern California with a 2-1 record as the Wildcats defeated both Azusa Pacific and Pepperdine on their campus courts before falling 7-0 to ninth-ranked Texas A&M Sunday at a neutral location in Burbank.
The Waves are now 2-2 on the season with both losses coming against nationally-ranked (top 15) opposition. They have another busy road weekend coming up with three matches in Tulsa vs. the Golden Hurricane, Oral Roberts and Omaha between Jan. 26-27.
ACU's weekend in the Golden State started rather shockingly with Azusa Pacific – ranked 13th in D2 after reaching last year's national semifinals – sweeping the Wildcats in doubles. The Purple and White, however, put forth a tremendous response in singles by winning five of six contests, three of which were decided in a third set.
The Wildcats' excellent singles play continued into Saturday, where they won four matches against the Pepperdine Waves. Seniors
Josh Sheehy and
Sebastian Langdon, and junior
Nikolas Moceanu each won in straight sets, but it was freshman
Riley Tran's three-set win at No. 4 over Tim Zeitvogel that kept the Wildcats and Waves from playing a best-of-three doubles tiebreaker.
Sunday, the Aggies bested the Wildcats in the team point column but all the individual matches were incredibly close as both
Josh Sheehy and Moceanu were edged in three-set battles by No. 89 Juan Carlos Aguilar and Noah Schachter, respectively.
Jonathan Sheehy, freshman
Dimitris Azoides and Tran also lost their first sets to Texas A&M by either a 7-5 or 7-6 score.
ACU didn't win any doubles matches this weekend, but its combined singles record was 9-9 as Langdon, Moceanu,
Josh Sheehy and Tran all posted 2-1 marks.
