Volleyball honored with spot on AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll

ABILENE – Head coach Angela Mooney's Abilene Christian Volleyball team Monday was announced as one of only 25 squads named to the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll for the 2017-18 school year. The Wildcats also were the only Southland Conference institution named to this prestigious list, and one of 22 beach teams to receive an AVCA Team Academic Award.
Volleyball completed this past year with a 3.58 grade-point average, second only to women's soccer (3.59) among all ACU varsity teams, and placed 15 student-athletes on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll for the 2017 fall term (3.0 GPA or higher). Rising senior Jacey Smith additionally was honored by the league with a spot on its All-Academic Second Team.
An outside hitter from Wimberley, Texas, Smith owns a GPA just shy of 4.0, and last fall she led the Wildcats into their first Southland Conference Championship match. She went on to garner all-tournament honors after averaging 4.17 kills and 2.83 digs per set through three matches in Corpus Christi, Texas vs. Stephen F. Austin (W, 3-2), Houston Baptist (W, 3-1) and Central Arkansas (L, 0-3).
The AVCA Team Academic Award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619-team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
Over 1,000 different schools have earned the award in the program's 25-year history, with exactly 8,461 awards been given out in total.
