ABILENE – A four-sport letter winner at Lubbock's Trinity Christian High School, Peyton Himango this week signed on to join Abilene Christian's 2019 beach roster.
As a middle blocker and outside hitter, Himango helped lead the Lions to the three consecutive TAPPS 4A State Championships from 2015 to 2017 while going undefeated in district competition. For her part, Himango accumulated 1,027 kills, 75 aces and 135 blocks during this stretch, which resulted in her receiving the title of NCSAA Second Team All-America in addition to five First Team All State citations from TAPPS and TAVC.
She also won back-to-back District Offensive MVP trophies, was tabbed to the NCSAA Super Regional First Team, and later nominated for Under Armor All America.
"We're thrilled to be adding Peyton to our program," said second year head coach Angela Mooney. "She has achieved a lot of success in multiple sports in high school and truly understands what it means to work hard and compete.
"Peyton is a nice athlete with good size and adds some much needed depth to the beach roster, but more than that, she perfectly fits ACU and the culture we're in the process of establishing within our entire volleyball program."
Himango's diverse athletic pursuits also earned her a spot on the 2015 TAPPS State All-Tournament basketball team, and the 2014 regional track and field meet (high jump). Her mother, Missy, was a basketball letter winner at South Plains College, while her father, Shannon, played hockey and baseball at St. Olaf College.
A three-time TAPPS Academic All State honoree, Himango intends to major in biology with a minor in Spanish as her career goals include becoming a pediatrician and performing medical mission work in foreign countries.
Himango was honored with the 2014 Outstanding Pre AP Biology Student Award followed by an impressive list of Academic Excellence Awards garnered in Honors English 2, Spanish 2, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology.
The Wildcats play their last two beach volleyball tournaments of their inaugural season this weekend and next. First they play four matches at Texas A&M-Kingsville followed by a Houston Baptist-hosted round-robin tournament featuring all five Southland Conference schools.
ACU's 2018 indoor season begins the weekend of Aug. 24 at a tournament hosted by Georgia Tech, where the Wildcats will face teams from Winthrop, Georgetown and Idaho State in addition to the Yellow Jackets.
Additional information on the Wildcats' 2018 slate will be released in the coming weeks.
