ABILENE – It can be tough to grade your team when it's forced to battle itself, but head ACU volleyball coach Angela Mooney noticed more successes than failures during Thursday night's four-set intrasquad at Moody Coliseum.
Positives included a large number of blocks and slow downs at the net that resulted in transitional digs. ACU combined for 12.5 blocks with junior transfer Kennedy Shelstead leading the way with six assists. Junior Kendall Bosse and freshman Lorin McNeil had a hand in three, while four players finished with two.
And of tonight's 273 attack attempts, 118 were dug out, resulting in a .143 attack percentage. Sophomore Amanda Chapa collected a match-high 21 digs followed by Bosse plus classmates Jacey Smith and Mikai Brown with 12. Defensive specialist and sophomore Sofia Resendiz had 10.
Where did the Wildcats need improvement? Mooney was quick to point out the areas of service and serve reception as 17 aces were neutralized by 15 service errors. But overall she felt her players were focused on the areas they needed to work on, and executed plays as designed.
"I saw some things come together, and noticed other areas we need to work on going into next week when we get closer to establishing our starting lineup ... but tonight was a good gauge for seeing who responded to being under pressure," she said. "For our newcomers, this was there first time in a true six-on-six situation – their first game-like situation, and I enjoyed seeing them thrive in this environment."
Freshman Katelyn Mueller was one of several standouts, delivering a team-high 14 kills for Purple in addition to a respectable .275 hitting percentage. She also dealt three aces and dug out eight attacks to tie senior Corrine Grandcolas for the most points with 17.0.
Grandcolas recorded 11 kills for Black and led the Wildcats with five service aces, while junior Lauren Walker totaled 11 kills on 18 attempts (.500).
Purple outhit black, .206-.085, with Bosse assisting on 36 of the team's 49 kills. Purple won games one through three by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-13, and Black was triumphant in game four, 25-17. Purple led Black wire-to-wire in their game two and three victories.
The Wildcats begin their season a week from Friday with a trip to Laramie, Wyo., for the Rumble in the Rockies. ACU's opposition there includes Portland, Wyoming and South Dakota.
