Lamar beats men's tennis to snap Wildcats' win streak

ABILENE – Abilene Christian saw its six-match win streak come to an end Friday at home vs. Lamar as the Cardinals jumped out to a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-2 victory at the Eager Tennis Center. The Wildcats are now 14-9 overall this spring and 2-1 vs. the Southland Conference, while the Cardinals improved to 14-6 and 3-0.

Despite being subjected to a large and vociferous ACU crowd, the Cardinals hung on to win the doubles point thanks to their 7-6 (5) win at the No. 2 line where the team of Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer edged Josh Sheehy and Paul Michael Domanski. Earlier Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis beat Nico Agritelley and Henry Adams, 6-3, at the top line, while at No. 3, it was ACU's Jonathan Sheehy and Cole Lawson who were victorious over Juuso Laitinen and Logan Powell, 6-3. Sheehy and Lawson are now 5-2 on the spring.

Jon Sheehy also earned the Wildcats' first singles point, beating Lis in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, for his fourth consecutive win and 10th of the season. Unfortunately, his win came with ACU trailing, 3-0, and shortly after his victory, Hoogenboezem completed his three-set win vs. Agritelley, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, giving Lamar its third straight win over the Wildcats.

ACU earned its second point with the match already decided as Sebastian Langdon defeated Laitinen, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, at No. 6 singles for his seventh win of the spring.

The Wildcats men's and women's teams will spend the rest of this  weekend celebrating with its alumni, and will return to action on Wednesday, April 12 with a home doubleheader vs. Midwestern State that's scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
