ABILENE – Abilene Christian tennis wrapped up a men's and women's doubleheader sweep of Nicholls in less than three hours Sunday at the Eager Tennis Center as each Wildcat team won by the same 7-0 score.
The women's victory was their 12th of the season and fourth in conference play in addition to being their fourth shutout of the spring. The ACU men, meanwhile, improved to 13-8 in winning their conference opener. Both teams now also own a five-game winning streak.
By comparison, the Nicholls men and women fell to 4-7 (0-3 Southland) and 6-6 (1-5 Southland).
The Wildcat women won the doubles point with victories coming at the No. 1 and 3 lines.
Whitney Williams and
Erin Walker won the top-line match, 6-3, for their fourth-straight win, and
Autumn Crossnoe and
Jordan Henry were 6-2 winners in making their Southland debut together at No. 3.
All but one singles match was then decided in straight sets with Walker the lone exception as she rallied from a set down to beat Lingfeng Gu, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. Walker has now won her last three matches in improving to 11-7 overall, 4-1 vs. the league, and 9-5 at No. 1
Lucile Pothier pushed her win streak to eight with a 6-2, 6-1 decision at No. 3 over Ambika Pande, and freshman
Sarah Eleanor Adams kept her lead for most team victories with 14 after winning her fifth-consecutive match, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 over Mariia Kozachok.
The men's victory followed a somewhat similar script. The Wildcats' 2's and 3's clinched the doubles points with scores of 6-2 and 6-4, and then the singles lineup mowed down the Colonels in straight sets. The closest Nicholls came to a third set was at No. 4, where
Hunter Holman held off Max Sinn, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Holman and
Josh Sheehy share the team lead with a dozen victories apiece. Sheehy today beat Bernard Wezeman, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 for his fifth-consecutive victory, and following him were victories posted by
Jonathan Sheehy at No. 2 (6-3, 6-3), Nico Agritelley at No. 3 (6-1, 6-1), Holman,
Henry Adams at No. 5 (6-0, 6-2), and
Sebastian Langdon at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0).
Langdon won both his singles matches this weekend. Thursday he helped the Wildcats clinch their 4-3 win vs. Dartmouth by battling back from a 5-1 deficit in the third set to win 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.
The ACU men return to action Saturday, March 25 at New Orleans, while the women will first play at Southeastern Friday, March 24 followed by their Saturday dual vs. the Privateers.
