Tennis splits home doubleheader with Trinity and Tyler

ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis followed a 7-0 victory over Trinity with a 4-3 loss to Tyler Junior College Saturday in its home season debut at the Teague Special Events Center. The Tigers are the 14th ranked team in NCAA DIII, while the Apaches are the nation's top-ranked JUCO team with four players ranked among the top 40 in the ITA Tennis rankings.

Today's split decision gives the Wildcats an 8-5 record.

"Tyler's real tough, playing them is like facing a top-50 DI school," said head coach Hutton Jones. "I thought it was impressive that we took the doubles point against them, especially at No. 1 with Nico (Agritelley) and Henry (Adams) winning there, and the new combo of Cole (Lawson) and Jonathan (Sheehy) keeps getting stronger at No. 3. We had our chances in singles but Tyler withstood our early challenges at the top three positions, so we lost some of our momentum, and then we wound up winning two of our last three matches between the No. 4 and 6 spots."

Adams and Agritelley defeated Tyler's Ferran Calvo and Enrique Pardo, 6-2, for their fifth win of the season, while Jonathan Sheehy's and Lawson's 6-1 victory at No. 3 kept them undefeated at 4-0 as ACU won its ninth doubles point over its last 10 matches.

In singles competition, Tyler's top-flight roster of nationally ranked competitiors kept the Wildcats from adding to their lead as No. 1 Jorge Martinez rallied from a set down to beat Josh Sheehy, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. No. 2 Calvo topped Agritelley in a close match at No. 2 , 6-2, 7-5, and No. 15 Pardo held off Jonathan Sheehy at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3. Tyler won the match clinching point at No. 4, where No. 27 Reid Feehan edged Henry Adams, 6-2, 7-5.

Juniors Hunter Holman and Paul Michael Domanski finished their day undefeated in singles with wins at No. 5 and 6. Holman beat No. 37 Rahul Robinson, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, for his eighth-straight win in improving to 8-3 and Domanski beat Drew Brown at No. 6, 6-2, 7-5.

ACU's earlier match vs. Trinity was a relative breeze compared to the Tyler dual as the Wildcats won all six of their singles contests in straight sets, and didn't allow any of their doubles opponents to get any closer than 6-3.

The Wildcats return to action Friday, Feb. 10 for a doubleheader in Lubbock vs. Texas Tech and Texas Permian Basin. Start times are to be decided.
