ABILENE - The Abilene Christian and Northwestern State basketball teams will be wearing specially made P4X warm-up jerseys when they take to the court for their 2 p.m. game Saturday at Moody Coliseum. P4X is short for
Play for Rex, an Abilene-based foundation whose aim is to positively affect the lives of those affected by pediatric cancer through the donations of Apple iPod Touches and iTunes gift cards to patients at Cook Children's Medical Center. The foundation also seeks to help children and families in the Abilene area at Meek Children's Medical Center at Hendrick Medical Center, the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and Hendrick Hospice.
The foundation's namesake is Rex Fleming, the son of Abilene natives Jill and
Lance Fleming. Lance serves ACU Athletics as its Associate Director of Athletics for Media Relations. Rex was a patient at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, from November 2010 through November 2012 during his courageous battle with an aggressive tumor near the center of his brain. Rex was eight years old when he was diagnosed with Grade 3 Glioma Astrocytoma, and over the next two years he underwent two surgeries in addition to dozens of radiation and bi-monthly chemotherapy treatments.
Since Rex's passing in 2012, the foundation has become a resource of help—financially and in other ways—for pediatric cancer patients and their families who are struggling with life-altering diseases, similar to the Flemings. One of the Flemings' goals is to have "Play 4 Rex" become a symbol for living a life with passion, with purpose and with love, much like Rex lived his life.
Net proceeds from tomorrow's gate will go to the foundation, and for those who can't make it to the doubleheader, both games will air locally on 98.1 FM – The Ticket. There's also a live stats option plus video stream.
Grant Boone will have the play-by-play for both games.
The ACU women (15-8, 9-2 Southland) come into this game against the Lady Demons (11-11, 5-6 Southland) looking to bounce back from a disheartening 80-70 loss Wednesday at Central Arkansas, which dropped them into a tie for third place with Stephen F. Austin in the conference standings. The Sugar Bears and Lamar are a half game ahead at 10-2.
The Wildcats received a career performance from senior forward
Suzzy Dimba, who scored 33 points vs. UCA on 12-of-15 shooting with eight free throws, a block and five rebounds that lifted her career total to 907 – which is good for eighth place all-time at ACU. Her classmate
Sydney Shelstead pulled down seven rebounds, which moved her into 10th place on the Wildcats' career rebounding list with 823.
Senior guard
Alexis Mason chipped in 11 points vs. the Sugar Bears and now sits one point behind Suzanne Johnson for seventh place all-time at ACU with 1,501 points.
Northwestern State has won its last two games, including a 76-72 decision over Stephen F. Austin at Prather Coliseum on Feb. 4. They followed that win with a dominant, 75-54, performance vs. Houston Baptist, but away from home the Lady Demons are 1-9.
Pacing the NSU offense are Beatrice Attura and Cheyenne Brown with 18.9 and 12.4 points per game, respectively. Brown also is the Lady Demons' leading rebounder with 6.9 per game.
