ABILENE – Abilene Christian (9-14, 5-6 Southland) completes its three-match road trip Halloween night with a 6:30 p.m. contest at Sam Houston State (13-11, 9-2), which will be streamed on ESPN3.
The Wildcats are currently 1-1 on their latest conference venture. They lost in three to second-place Central Arkansas Thursday, but rebounded Saturday with a 3-1 decision at Northwestern State. ACU has now won its last four contests vs. the Lady Demons, and the victory, more importantly, kept it a win ahead of 4-8 New Orleans and Incarnate Word for the eighth and final spot in the Southland Conference Championship.
The Bearkats and Wildcats are meeting for the second time this season with Sam Houston State winning 3-1 during their Sept. 23 match at Moody Coliseum. ACU won the first set 25-18 before dropping the next three as the Bearkats went on to win their first seven league matches.
This past weekend, however, was not kind to Sam Houston as it lost both its road battles at Northwestern State and Central Arkansas by a 3-1 margin. The consecutive defeats dropped the Bearkats behind Stephen F. Austin (11-1) and UCA (10-2) in the conference standings.
SFA visits Moody Coliseum Thursday night at 6 p.m. to kick off the Wildcats' final homestand, which also will include a Saturday 1 p.m. match vs. Lamar.
Sam Houston runs one of the best offenses in the conference and claims four of the league's top-eight point scorers in Jordyn Vaughn (4.37 pts. per set), Samantha Anderson (3.83), Brooke White (3.80) and Taylor Cunningham (3.54).
The Wildcats will attempt to counter their attack with the league's No. 2 block (2.47 blocks per set), which features middles
Lorin McNeil (1.10) and
Lauren Walker (1.05). Sophomore libero
Amanda Chapa also is one the league's best defensive specialists in averaging 4.63 digs per set to rank third among all conference players.
