ABILENE - Sophomore
Josh Sheehy went 4-0 at No. 1 singles and was perfect in doubles competition as the Abilene Christian men's tennis team won three of four dual matches on its recently completed road trip through southwest Ohio and Kentucky.
The Wildcats (7-4) won their first three matches, beating Wright State, 6-1, Dayton, 4-3, and Eastern Kentucky, 6-1, but couldn't pull off their second sweep in as many weekends as Northern Kentucky snapped their seven-match winning streak with a 5-2 win.
"Not bad having won seven of our last eight," said head coach
Hutton Jones. "NKU played us well, but I feel we're getting tougher and there's been many bright spots for us over the last two weeks. We've really been pushed by our opposition and have responded well every time even though that's not always reflected on the scoreboard.Â
"This is going to be a special year. Our guys are competing at a really high level."
ACU used all 10Â of its players on this trip and they combined for a 15-9 singles record (.625) and 8-4 mark in doubles (.667), winning all but the doubles point against NKU. Of those 24 singles matches, 11 were decided in three sets with the Wildcats pulling out seven wins.
In addition to Sheehy's spotless mark at the top line, the Wildcats also received three wins from sophomore
Sebastian Langdon – one of which was the match clincher vs. Dayton – plus two victories from
Henry Adams, Nico Agritelley and defending Southland Conference Player of the Week
Hunter Holman.
ACU's doubles pairings went 2-2 at No. 1 and were 3-1 at both the No. 2 and 3 positions. Sheehy and Langdon went 3-0 together at the No. 2 line, and in his lone appearance at No. 1, Sheehy defeated Eastern Kentucky's top line duo, 6-4, alongside Agritelley.
Cole Lawson and
Jonathan Sheehy also recorded multiple victories together at No. 3, defeating teams from Dayton (6-2) and EKU (7-6). Their win over the Colonels gave the Wildcats their third doubles point of the weekend.
The ACU men make their home debut Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. against UT Arlington. This dual will utilize the World Team Tennis format in which each match consists of five sets of a different configuration: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.Â
Prior to each match, coaches decide the order in which the sets will be played and each player on a team usually plays in at least one of the five sets. Scoring is no-advantage and the first team to reach five games wins each set.
The match will be played indoors at the Teague Special Events Center.
