TUCSON, Ariz. — The Arizona Wildcats took advantage of some sloppy ACU defense Tuesday night to take a 12-1 win over the Wildcats in a non-conference baseball game at Hi Corbett Field.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 16-36 on the season, while Arizona — ranked No. 25 in the country in RPI rankings and hoping to host an NCAA regional tournament next weekend — improves to 34-20 on the season. The teams will play again Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time (8 p.m.) in ACU's final game of the season and Arizona's final regular-season home game of the season.
ACU's Wildcats didn't help their cause any Tuesday night with four errors, a run-scoring balk and three passed balls. Arizona took advantage of most of those miscues as it was able to build a 5-0 lead through three innings against ACU starting pitcher
Kyle Carroll, who was saddled with the loss, finishing 3-8 on the season.
ACU got a run back in the fifth when
Derek Scott was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and stole second. He went to third on an infield single by
Mark Pearson — his second of the game — and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Stetson Meek. But that was ACU's only run of the game, and their final threat of the night.
Arizona pitchers, in fact, retired the final 14 ACU batters in order as ACU struggled to get anything going offensively. ACU wound up with just three hits against four Arizona pitchers, including the two by Pearson.
Arizona put the game away with two unearned runs in the fifth and then four more in the sixth to push the lead to 11-1.
