OJAI, Calif. –
Kaysie Hermsdorf kept her senior season alive after winning both her singles and doubles semifinal matches Saturday at the 116th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament.
Hermsdorf twice today defeated Grand Canyon's Tatum Prudhomme in trying to become the second Wildcat in as many seasons to win both Ojai Championships. She won their morning singles match in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, and several hours later won their afternoon doubles contest, 3-6, 6-3, 10-1.
Hermsdorf won the match alongside sophomore
Lucile Pothier, and Sunday they'll take on their teammates
Erin Walker and
Whitney Williams in a match between the Wildcats' top-two doubles tandems. The all-ACU final is set for 2 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. CT at historic Libby Park.
Top-seeded Walker and Williams advanced to the championship match after defeating fourth-seeded Caroline Casper and Lea Yen of Pomona-Pitzer, 6-2, 6-4. Hermsdorf and Pothier are the tournament's No. 3 seeds.
Walker won both titles here a year ago, but her shot to repeat as singles champion was derailed by sixth-seeded Mary Zhao of Ponoma-Pitzer, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Hermsdorf will meet Zhao at Libbey Park Sunday at 9:30 a.m. PT / 11:30 a.m. CT.
The Wildcats entered five individuals into The Ojai, and have an overall singles record of 13-3 (.813) as all made it into the quarterfinals. It was during this round Friday that the eighth-seeded Hermsdorf beat third-seeded Pothier, 6-4; 3-6; 6-1 – snapping the sophomore's 18-match winning streak – and senior
Nada Marjanovic played the final match of her collegiate career, falling to Zhao, 6-2, 6-3.
Despite never being recognized as an all-conference selection, Marjanovic produced an incredible career singles record of 71-18 (.798) in four springs with the Wildcats. She led the team as a sophomore with 20 wins and this season posted an overall record of 24-6.
Williams also was eliminated in the quarterfinals, as Prudhomme rallied from a set down to win, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and snap the sophomore's 15-match winning streak.
Williams finished the spring at 21-6. Pothier completed her second year 24-7, while Walker finished 16-14 with a majority of those wins coming at No. 1.
