ABILENE – Abilene Christian tennis welcomed back its old NCAA DII rivals from Midwestern State to the Eager Tennis Pavilion Wednesday evening, and the results were quite similar to what they were three years ago with the ACU women dominating No. 20 MSU, 7-0, and the Wildcat men grinding out a 5-2 victory over the 11th-ranked Mustangs.
The victory lifted the women's overall record to 19-6 as sophomores
Lucile Pothier and
Whitney Williams extended their winning streaks to 15 and 12 matches, respectively. Pothier downed Lindsay Nochowicz, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 3 in improving to 21-6, while Williams topped Abby White at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4.
Senior
Nada Marjanovic, who was playing the final home match of her career this evening along with four other Wildcats, kept pace with Pothier for the team lead with 21 victories, beating Greta Lazzarotto at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4.
Senior
Kaysie Hermsdorf, with her older sister Micah Hermsdorf watching in the crowd tonight, was a straight-set winner at No. 2, defeating Eirini Kontak, 6-2, 6-4, and at No. 6, freshman Jordan made quick work of Alexis Arrieta, 6-0, 6-1.
Junior
Erin Walker was a three-set winner at No. 1, where she has won 12 times this spring, edging Maddie Schorlemmer, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, while in doubles she and Williams doubled up the duo of Nochowicz and Kontaki, 6-3, for their 17th win together.
Hermsdorf and Pothier also kept rolling along at No. 2, defeating the tandem of White and Schorlemmer, 6-2, for victory No. 21.
The scores were much closer on the men's side as the dual lasted close to four hours. ACU (19-8) won all three doubles matches by two points, and all but two singles matches went to a third set.
The Wildcats' No. 1 and 2 teams of
Henry Adams and
Nico Agritelley, and
Jason Proctor and
Paul Domanski each escaped with 7-5 victories over the Mustangs, while freshmen No. 3's
Sebastian Langdon and
Josh Sheehy defeated Radu Popa and Chris Norrie, 6-4, in improving to 6-1.
ACU soon would build out its lead to 3-0 on the strength of back-to-back straight-set wins by Domanski at No. 6 and Agritelley at No. 3. Domanski beat Benjamin Neander, 6-2, 6-4, indoors for win No. 13 of the spring, and then Agritelley tied his teammate following a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Norrie.
Sheehy clinched the match for ACU in the first of four-consecutive three-set matches to close the dual, coming back from a set down to beat MSU senior Kyle Davidson at No. 1, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The victory was Sheehy's 16th of the spring, tying him with sophomore
Hunter Holman, who was last off the courts tonight after dropping a tough three-set battle at No. 4 to Dillon Pineda, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (2).
In between those decisions, Adams made it a 5-0 game after holding off Popa on the indoor courts, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and then the Mustangs broke ACU's bid for a shutout as Ramon Toyos at No. 2 beat senior
Jason Proctor, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
The Wildcats return to action this weekend for matches against Texas A&M and New Orleans. The men play in College Station Friday at noon and will join the women Sunday in Houston (Rice University) to complete their Southland Conference duals vs. the Privateers at 1 p.m.
ACU men and women each won the doubles point over UNO and enter singles with a 1-0 lead.
