ACU's Wentz earns Southland academic honor

FRISCO – Former ACU men's basketball standout Parker Wentz has been selected to the Southland Conference all-academic team for his performance in the classroom, the third time Wentz has been honored by the league.
Wentz – a three-time academic all-conference selection and a two-time CoSIDA academic all-District 7 selection – finished his career in 2015-16 and will enroll later this year in dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Wentz carries a 3.65 grade point average while majoring in biology / pre-dental, and was also the Wildcats' third-leading scorer this season at 8.7 points per game. He is joined on the first team academic all-conference team by Incarnate Word's Kyle Hittle (also voted the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year), Stephen F. Austin's Thomas Walkup, Jordan Howard of Central Arkansas, and Aurimas Majauskas of Sam Houston State.
The second team consists of Bryce Douvier of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sabri Thompson of Northwestern State, Mitchell Badillo of Incarnate Word, Revel Chukwujekwu of Houston Baptist, and Kevin Hill of New Orleans.
Wentz completed his ACU career third all-time both 3-point field goal makes and attempts, and as the all-time leader in 3-point field goal percentage (42.8 percent).
The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year.
The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All åçnominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
