Men's Tennis conquers Nicholls in conference opener

HOUMA, La. - Abilene Christian men's tennis Wednesday outlasted Nicholls 6-1 in its first match of the Southland Conference season. The Wildcats won two of three doubles and five of six singles matches in improving to 15-6 on the spring.

Head coach Hutton Jones tried out some new doubles combinations even though the Wildcats had won five of its last six doubles points following a six-match doubles losing streak.

Today, freshman Josh Sheehy played only his second doubles match all season off the top line but he and classmate Sebastian Langdon were successful in beating Sam Meessen and Evan Karatzas, 6-2. At No. 2 senior Jason Proctor and sophomore Paul Domanski were reunited for the first time since Jan. 23, and they came through with a 6-3 win over Max Sinn and Bernard Wezeman.
 
Sophomore Henry Adams and junior Nico Agritelley played for only the second time together this spring and first since time since Jan. 30, and they lost 6-3 at No. 1 over Oleksander Podgursky and Kieran Cronin.

All the singles matches were extremely close even though the Wildcats won the lion's share.

Sheehy broke his first two-match losing streak of the year with a 7-6 (9), 6-2 win over Podgursky, and at the No. 2 position, Proctor held off  Karatzas, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6, for one of two ACU victories in three sets. Agritelley had the other at No. 3, coming back from a set down to beat Sinn, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Hunter Holman moved to within one victory of tying Sheehy (14) for the team lead in wins after topping Meessen at No. 4, 6-4, 7-5, and Cronin retired vs. Adams at No. 5 after losing the first set, 7-6.

Nicholls earned its lone point at No. 6, where Wezeman beat Langdon, 6-3, 6-7, 6-2.

The Wildcats return to action Friday for a 10 a.m. dual at New Orleans as part of a doubleheader with the women's team, however, both matches may be affected by rain.
