ABILENE - Abilene Christian women's basketball closes out the calendar year with the start of its fourth Southland Conference season Saturday at noon at Southeastern Louisiana. Live stats and video will be offered in addition to radio coverage here in the Key City on 98.1 FM – The Ticket with
Grant Boone handling the play-by-play.
Saturday's contest marks the seventh all-time meeting between ACU and Southeastern Louisiana, and the sixth as members within the Southland Conference. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 5-1 and have won the last five games dating back to 2013-14.
ACU has won its three games in Hammond, La., by scores of 96-82, 83-65 and 88-72, while its two wins at Moody Coliseum over the Lady Lions have been much closer: 75-74 and 72-70. Should this trend continue, the Wildcats will break their current six-game road losing streak – the program's longest since the 2006-07 team lost seven consecutive games.
The two schools have played each other twice the past two seasons, but Saturday's meeting will be their only one of the 2016-17 season.
The Wildcats' all-time record vs. the Southland is an impressive 34-16 (.680) and they are 2-1 in their conference lid-lifters. ACU won at New Orleans, 88-44, in early 2014, and split its previous two meetings with Central Arkansas, losing at home in 2015, 60-66, and winning in Conway last January, 61-49.
ACU recently finished its non-conference schedule at 6-6 following a 106-58 victory over Sul Ross – the 50th time an ACU team has scored 100 or more points in a single game. The Wildcats established 10 single-game season highs vs. the Lobos, including points (106), assists (25), blocks (5), steals (17), field goals (38), 3-point field goals (13) and free throws (17). Individually,
Suzzy Dimba came within two assists and one rebound of a triple-double and
Alexis Mason scored a season-high 24 points on the strength of six 3-pointers as each one of the 11 Wildcats who appeared scored at least two points.
Mason enters Saturday's game right behind Ashley King and
Whitney West Swinford with 230 3-pointers on 683 tries (.337). King made a school-record 239 treys on 625 attempts (.382) while West Swinford connected 234 times on a school record 706 attempts (.331).
Dimba continues to climb the school's record charts as well. She first cracked ACU's career rebounding leaderboard with eight boards two weeks ago vs. Murray State, and with nine rebounds vs. the Lobos she now sits one rebound behind Jody Meyer (822) for ninth place. Dimba will have to average 9.94 rebounds over the last 18 games of the regular season to reach 1,000 in her decorated career.
The Lady Lions of Southeastern Louisiana start conference play at 2-9 and have lost their last six games, including ones to Florida, Colorado and Colorado State. Taylin Underwood leads her side with 15.4 points per game and Tyler Morrison is the top rebounder with 6.3 per game.
