ACU set to scrimmage Friday at Shotwell
4/16/2015 6:00:00 PM | Football
ABILENE – The ACU football team will essentially close down spring training Friday evening with a situational scrimmage at Shotwell Stadium.
The scrimmage will begin at 5 p.m .and is open to the public. The first team offense will go against the first team defense and the second team offense will go against the second team defense. The offenses should combine for between 60-70 plays. The scrimmage will also see the Wildcats go through kicking situations (PATs, field goals and punts), but no kickoff, kickoff return or punt return scenarios.
After Friday night's scrimmage, the Wildcats will practice Sunday at 3 p.m. and, for the final time this spring, at 4 p.m Wednesday. The bulk of the team's spring workload, however, will conclude with Friday evening's scrimmage.
ACU head coach Ken Collums – who will be in his fourth season at the helm in 2015 – said his team has made good progress during the spring.
"We're right where we need to be," he said. "We were able to add a couple of defensive linemen that have made us instantly better. (Transfer) Junior Olie will make an immediate impact from the first game, and (UTEP transfer) Dewan Edmonson will help us. Plus we've got guys back like Rishaad Wimbley, William Moore, LaMarcus Allen, Devondric Meadows and Dylan Douglass who are playing really well this spring."
The linebacking corps has also been solid this spring with sophomore-to-be Sam Denmark leading the way. Denmark, who moved into the starting lineup at middle linebacker early in the season, has had a fantastic spring camp and leads the defensive unit.
"If you can compress people up front with your line and make tackles with your linebackers, your defense is suddenly much better," Collums said. "i really think we're going to give people fits defensively in the fall because we're going to be able to do those two things. Lynn Grady and Travis Tarver can really run and hit on the outside and guys like Bryson Gates, Myles Solsberry and Gavin Burford who have been solid."
The secondary is a work in progress with both safeties from 2014 gone, but Collums said he feels good about the cornerback position with Keith Barnett and Terry Ausborne back, along with Quinton Baker and Jamar Mack. The Wildcats have several players battling for the two spots at safety, but none have separated themselves from the pack.
Offensively, Collums said some of the young offensive linemen who redshirted last year have begun to show promise, including Colton King. Returning all-Southland Conference performer Codey Funk has had a good spring camp and leads the offensive line.
"Along with the guys who are back that started last year – Funk, Chance Rieken and Riley Mayfeild – I like what I've seen from Austin Hisler and Colton King," Collums said. "Hisler got a little taste of it last year, but now it's his time to grow. Colton King is a rookie, but he's progressing at a faster pace than I expected."
At quarterback, returning starter Parker McKenzie is still in his spot, although he's being pushed by Dallas Sealey, who will be a redshirt freshman.
"Parker has had a good spring," Collums said. "He's the same steady guy we saw last year, which is what you want. He's got an even better command of our offense than he did last year. Dallas has been really sharp in the last week or so. You can tell everything is starting to click for him, and when he does it right, it's really good."
