ABILENE - Abilene Christian men's tennis suffered back-to-back 4-3 losses to non-conference opposition from Liberty and UT-Pan American on a cool Saturday afternoon at the Eager Tennis Pavilion.
The two losses dropped the Wildcats' season record to 4-11, with four of those losses coming by one point. Liberty, meanwhile, improved to 6-4, and UTPA snapped a four-match losing streak in moving up to 3-6.
ACU won and lost one doubles point, and had five of its 12 singles matches decided in a third set.
Sophomore
Nico Agritelley and junior
Marco Bensley were the Wildcats' lone double winners today on the singles court. Agritelley improved to 10-5 on the spring after upending Liberty's Sam Matheson 6-4, 6-7, 6-3, and UTPA's Hector Ramirez, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 2.
Bensley pushed his individual winning streak to three games with wins at No. 6 over the Flames' Jason Burgess, 6-4, 7-5, and Bronco Ethan Ammon, 6-3, 6-2.
Freshman
Paul Domanski won the only other ACU singles match today, beating Liberty's Diego Castano at No. 5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
ACU lost its No. 1 and 3 doubles contests to Liberty and split the remaining singles matches with three remarkably close defeats. No. 1 senior
Guilherme Gesser lost in three to Dillon Segur after being up a set, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, while at No. 4, Jorge Azuero rallied to beat freshman
Henry Adams, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. In between, junior
Jason Proctor was edged at No. 3 by Egon Samaai, 7-6, 7-6.
The Wildcats opened the UTPA match with two doubles victories as Gesser and Agritelley rolled Koby Jansen and Hector Ramirez, 6-2, at No. 1, and Proctor and Adams tripped up Juan Cruz Soria and Nikola Crvelin, 7-5, at No. 2.
The Broncs, however, were to quick to respond in singles as Cruz Soria tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gesser at the No. 1 position.
After the Wildcats picked up victories on court six and two, UTPA's Alvarez-Hevia bounced back from a set down with 6-2 victories in the second and third sets for a second point.
Jansen tied the match once more at 3-3 with a 7-6 (5), 6-1 victory over
Jason Proctor at No. 3 singles and then Crvelin clinched it for the Broncs at No. 5 singles over Domanski, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
The Wildcats return to action during the week of Spring Break with duals in Kansas City, Mo. vs. Northwest Missouri State, Nebraska-Omaha and UMKC.
